Enjoy 'the best street food' in Lucknow & Varanasi

By Tarry
Hi my lovelies….

I am a big time foodie indeed. Infact, I am one of the few members of my family who has tried a hell lot of cuisines. But then, cuisines aside… I am a pucca chatori and love love love street food. For me, the best way to explore any city is through its street food because that tells a lot about how the people live and what the city has been through times.

When we shifted to Lucknow, the first thing that caught my tongue was the ginormous varieties of street food or chaat available here. A delight for both veggies and non-vegetarians, both those who like it with a little spice or loaded with spices, the street food in Lucknow is just awesome. And not just Lucknow. Even the ancient city of Varanasi is a delight for street food lovers. Here is a small glimpse of what these cities, which can well be termed as gastronomic delights, offer. The clicks are by my good friend Avneesh Kumar who is a fabulous photographer & enjoys street food as much as I do ….

Where will you find the paani ke batashe (Gol Guppas for the uninitiated and Puchka for the Bengalis) with not just one or two, but 6 and even 8 different flavours of the spicy water? Or where can you savour a Basket chaat which is filled with all the known and lesser known varieties of chaat, is filling enough for two people and even the fried potato basket is edible? Or even more, where can you always keep asking for an extra helping of not just one or two, but all 6 varieties of the Gol Guppa water?

Head to Lucknow if you wish to enjoy all this. And these varieties are not just restricted to one or two outlets. While the Royal CafƩ at Hazratganj, Gomti Nagar and Shahnazaf Road boast of two flavours, the Chaat shop at Gol Darwarza near the tempo stand offers 6 different varieties of water. And then another one in the bylanes of Aminabad offers three. All across the city, you can just enjoy endless varieties of chaat at almost every lane and corner. And those who love dahi vada, the famous Santram Ke Dahi Bade, also called GPO ke Dahi Bade, is something you cannot miss. The man is a story in itself of how tough times could not stop him from coming here. Truly inspiring ....

In a similar way, even Varanasi is not to be left behind. The extremely famous Kashi Chaat Bhandaar at Godowlia in the city is just the spot you cannot miss, even if it means waiting for 10 to 15 minutes to find a seat to enjoy their specialities.
Trust me people! Each of their items is worthy of the wait. So whether it is their super famous tamatar chaat (the tangy tomato flavour quite awesome), or the special kashi chaat, the dahi puri or the simple palak chaat, they are all worth a bite and even two.

I am sure that these clicks, if not the words, would have definitely tickled your taste buds and tempted you. So whenever next you are planning your food itinerary or visiting these two cities, make sure to visit the street food lover’s delights at least once. Your tongue will love it :-)
